Choosing Sewing Thread for Sewing Machines: Industrial and Domestic

The right sewing thread depends on your machine, fabric and seam load. For most machine sewing, a smooth polyester thread in the correct weight, matched between top and bobbin, gives the cleanest and most reliable stitch.

Pick the wrong thread and you feel it immediately: skipped stitches, thread breaks, puckered seams, or a bobbin that keeps looping. As a cordage and trim manufacturer, we spend our days watching thread run through machines at speed, and the pattern is consistent. The thread has to suit three things at once — the machine, the fabric, and the load the seam will take. Get those three right and most sewing problems disappear before they start.

Match the thread to the machine first

Domestic and industrial machines are built differently, and they ask different things of a thread. A domestic machine runs slower, has lighter tension assemblies, and is usually fed from a small spool. It rewards a smooth, medium-weight thread that unwinds without kinking. Industrial lockstitch and overlock machines run far faster and hotter at the needle, so they need a thread with even twist, low lint, and enough heat tolerance to survive high-speed friction without fraying.

For most machine sewing across both categories, a spun or filament polyester sewing thread is the safe default. It has the strength, the stretch recovery, and the abrasion resistance that a moving seam needs. Polyester vs cotton machine thread

This is the question we get most, so here is the honest version. Cotton thread has a soft, matte look and sews beautifully on natural-fibre goods; it also takes dye and handles high iron heat well, which quilters and some garment makers value. Its limits are strength and stretch — cotton has little give, so on a seam that flexes it can snap before the fabric does.

Polyester is stronger for its thickness, resists abrasion, and stretches slightly with the seam instead of fighting it. That makes it the more forgiving choice for general machine sewing, bags, upholstery, workwear and anything that takes stress. The trade-off is a very slight sheen and lower heat tolerance than cotton at the iron.

Understanding thread weight and tex

Thread thickness is where a lot of confusion lives, mostly because two numbering systems point in opposite directions. On the common weight (Wt) scale, a higher number means a finer thread — 50 Wt is thinner than 30 Wt. The tex system runs the other way: tex is the weight in grams of 1,000 metres of thread, so a higher tex means a thicker, heavier thread. Ticket numbers are yet another shorthand you may see on cones.

The practical rule is simple. Match thread thickness to fabric weight and needle size. Fine fabrics take a finer thread and a smaller needle; heavy canvas, denim or webbing take a thicker thread and a larger needle eye so the thread passes without shredding. A thread that is too heavy for the needle is the single most common cause of fraying and breakage we see.

  • Lightweight fabrics (voile, lining): fine thread, small needle.
  • Medium fabrics (cotton, poplin, general garments): medium thread — the everyday workhorse.
  • Heavy fabrics (denim, canvas, upholstery): heavier thread, larger needle, sometimes a stronger top thread over a standard bobbin.

Top thread vs bobbin thread

A lockstitch is formed by two threads meeting in the fabric — the top thread from the needle and the bobbin thread underneath. As a default, use the same thread type and weight in both. When they match, tension balances easily and the knot sits hidden inside the fabric rather than showing on one face.

There are deliberate exceptions. Some operators run a slightly finer bobbin thread to fit more length on the bobbin and reduce changeovers, or to lighten bulk on very fine fabric. That works only when tension is retuned to suit. If your stitches show looping on top, or the bobbin thread peeks through on the surface, the cause is almost always a top-and-bobbin mismatch or a tension setting that no longer matches the pairing — check those before blaming the machine.

A quick pre-run checklist

Before a production run, we sew a test strip on the actual fabric and confirm four things: the stitch looks balanced from both sides, the thread unwinds without snagging, there is no fraying at the needle at full speed, and the colour is right under the light the goods will be judged in.
