Blog — notes from the factory floor

Working notes rather than marketing copy: what a pallet of cord actually costs to land, why two suppliers quote the same product at different weights, how minimum quantities are really set, and what goes wrong between sample approval and bulk production. Written from the manufacturing side by the people who run the machines, so the numbers are the ones we work to ourselves.

What these notes cover

Specifying a cord so two suppliers quote the same thing. Most disputes we see start with an under-specified enquiry. A diameter alone does not pin down a product: 4 mm three-ply twisted cotton and 4 mm sixteen-carrier braided cotton behave nothing alike in a knot, weigh differently per metre, and cost differently to make. The posts here work through what to state — fibre, construction, ply or carrier count, twist direction, finished diameter, put-up — so a quote is comparable across suppliers instead of being a guess.

What landed cost is actually made of. Ex-works price is the part buyers compare and the smaller half of the decision. Freight on cord is volumetric, so put-up choices move the number more than most people expect; duty depends on how the goods classify, not on what you call them. We write these up with real figures from our own shipments rather than ranges copied off other sites.

Where first orders go wrong. Colour approved on a screen instead of a cutting. A sample matched to one lot of yarn and bulk run from another. MOQs read per order when they are per colour. These are avoidable, and cheaper to read about than to learn.

Posts go up as buyers raise the questions. If something here is unclear, or there is a sourcing problem you would like covered, the contact page reaches us directly — we would rather answer it once in public than ten times by email.
