Ribbon Width Chart: mm to Inches, by Ribbon

Ribbon is sold by width. In India and Europe widths are quoted in millimetres, while many US buyers order in fractional inches. This chart lists every standard width on our ribbon pages. It gives the exact inch conversion (mm ÷ 25.4), the fractional-inch name the width is usually sold under, and which ribbons come in it.

Standard means the width is listed as a standard width on that ribbon’s page. In range means it falls inside the width range the page states, but is not listed as a standard width, so confirm it when you ask for a quote. Organza is slit to the widths you order anywhere from 6 to 100 mm, so it has no fixed list of widths.

Width ranges by ribbon

Satin ribbon: 3 mm to 100 mm, polyester, single face or double faced, woven edge. Standard widths 3, 6, 9, 13, 16, 19, 25, 38, 50, 75 and 100 mm.
Grosgrain ribbon: 3 mm to 100 mm, ribbed polyester, woven edge. Standard widths 6, 9, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 38, 50 and 75 mm.
Velvet ribbon: single-face velvet in six standard widths, 6, 10, 15, 25, 38 and 50 mm.
Organza ribbon: sheer polyester, 6 mm to 100 mm, heat-sealed on both edges. The organza page groups widths by use: 6–15 mm for craft and stationery, 10–25 mm for gift packaging and favours, and 38–100 mm for wedding and party decoration.
Gold braided ribbon: approximately 6 mm wide (about 1/4″). Confirm the exact width with the quote.

Near-identical inch names

Two pairs of metric widths share an inch name. 9 mm (0.354 in) and 10 mm (0.394 in) are both sold as 3/8″. 15 mm (0.591 in) and 16 mm (0.63 in) are both sold as 5/8″. When you order, state the width in millimetres so the quote and the delivered roll match.

Questions

What is 3/8 inch ribbon in mm?

3/8″ is 9.525 mm. It is sold as 9 mm or 10 mm: satin and grosgrain list 9 mm as a standard width, and velvet lists 10 mm.

What is 1 inch ribbon in mm?

1″ is 25.4 mm, sold as 25 mm. Satin, grosgrain and velvet all list 25 mm as a standard width, and organza is cut to it on order.

What widths does velvet ribbon come in?

Six standard widths: 6, 10, 15, 25, 38 and 50 mm.

Why should I order ribbon width in mm?

Because two metric widths can share one inch name. 9 mm and 10 mm are both called 3/8″, and 15 mm and 16 mm are both called 5/8″.
