How the mat is built, and what "woven" means here
These are not loom-woven mats. The body is 8mm braided rope, wound in a flat spiral and stitched coil to coil, which gives the ridged, ropey, over-and-under surface most buyers are picturing when they search for a woven placemat.
The rope. Ring-spun singles are plied on our own frames and run through our braiding machines at 8mm — cotton for the natural, undyed rope, spun polyester finished to a matte, cotton-like hand for the dyed shades. Braided rather than twisted matters on a flat mat: a braid holds a round, even cross-section under the stitching foot, so the coils sit level and the mat lies flat on the table instead of cupping at the rim.
The body. The rope is wound from the centre outwards and zigzag-stitched to the coil beside it, then the tail is tucked and finished at the edge. Standard is a 38cm round, which is the size most dinner-plate settings are built around. Ovals, rectangles and smaller coaster sizes come off the same stitch table.
The finish. Stitch density is a real specification, not a detail. A tighter zigzag gives a firmer, flatter mat that behaves like a trivet; a more open one gives a softer mat with more visible rope. Tell us which behaviour you want and we set the machine to it.
Colour: natural, undyed and the muted stone range
We dye the rope in-house before it is coiled, not the finished mat. Dyeing rope on a cone is far more even than trying to dye a stitched spiral, and it means one dye lot can supply an entire set, so mat one and mat six came off the same batch. The dyed rope is spun polyester rather than cotton — it takes colour well and repeats shade-to-shade, which is what makes a reorder match. Natural undyed cotton is the other standard option — a slightly warm off-white, which is not the same thing as bleached white, so say which one you mean when you brief us.
We match against a physical swatch or a Pantone reference, send a lab dip for approval, and only then run bulk.
