Drawstring cord looks like the simplest part of a garment, and it is the part that gets rejected most often. Wrong shade against the fabric, a tip that slips off in the wash, a cord that shrinks after the first laundry cycle — the cord is small, but it fails loudly.

We've run cordage machines in Jaipur since 2004. Braiders, twisters, our own dye house and cord-tipping machines all sit in the same building, so a hoodie drawcord is braided, shade-matched, cut to length and tipped without ever leaving our floor.

What is drawstring cord made of, and how is it constructed?

Drawstring cord is a narrow cord threaded through a casing at a waistband, hood or bag opening, so it can be pulled tight and tied. It is made two ways, and the difference is visible on the shelf:

  • Braided cord — yarns interlaced in a tubular or flat braid on our braiding machines. Braided cord is round, smooth, resists untwisting and slides easily through eyelets. This is the standard for hoodies, joggers, shorts and swimwear.
  • Twisted cord — yarns plied together on the twisters. It has visible spiral texture and a softer hand, and suits gift bags, home textiles, drawstring pouches and heritage-look apparel.

We run both in cotton and in polyester. Cotton is soft against skin, takes a matte shade and suits natural-fibre garments; a pre-shrunk cotton cord matters if the finished garment will be washed hot. Polyester holds colour longer, resists abrasion at the eyelet and does not relax after laundering, which is why athletic and outdoor programs usually specify it. Cotton-poly blends sit in between and are common on mid-price fleece.

Flat braided drawcord is a third option that buyers often forget. It lies flat inside the casing, does not roll, and is easier to grip — worth considering for heavyweight hoodies and drawstring bags.

How does buying drawstring cord wholesale actually work?

Send us four things and the quote writes itself: construction (braided or twisted), material, diameter or width, and either a Pantone reference or a physical fabric swatch for the shade. Tell us the finished cut length and the tip style if you want the cord delivered garment-ready.

From there the sequence is: we braid or twist the cord, dye it to shade — package-dyed for bulk running lengths, hank-dyed for smaller colour lots — then cut to your garment length and tip the ends on our aglet machines. Metal tips for a premium or streetwear look, heat-sealed or moulded tips for volume programs, or plain cut ends if you tip in your own factory.

Trial orders start at 100 meters, which is deliberately low. A drawcord is a component you have to see against your actual fabric before you commit to a season, and we would rather you order a trial length and approve it than gamble on a bulk PO. You can mix shades and diameters across SKUs in one shipment.

⚠️ Approve the shade on the cord itself, not on a screen. Cotton and polyester take dye differently, so the same Pantone reference reads warmer on cotton than on polyester. Always ask for the cord swatch against your garment fabric before bulk.

What is drawstring cord used for commercially?

Apparel is the biggest slice of what leaves our floor. Hoodie and sweatshirt drawcords, jogger and track-pant waistbands, shorts, swim trunks, scrubs and workwear, and the hood channels on jackets and windbreakers. These are the programs where cut length, tip finish and shade match all have to be right at once, and where a rejected cord holds up an entire cutting run.

Beyond garments, the same cord goes into drawstring backpacks and gym sacks, laundry and shoe bags, packaging and gift pouches, promotional and event bags, home textiles like cushion and curtain ties, and craft and haberdashery reels sold by the meter.

Different end uses pull the spec in different directions. Apparel buyers care most about shade match and tip durability through repeated washing. Bag and packaging buyers care about tensile strength and cost per meter at volume. Craft and retail buyers want consistent colour across reorders and neat put-up. Tell us which one you are, and we will spec the cord for that job rather than sending you a generic reel.

Why does in-house tipping change the drawcord you receive?

Most drawcord suppliers braid the cord and send it out for tipping. That handoff is where consistency goes. A job-work tipping shop runs several customers' cord on the same machine, mixes tip films, and returns a batch nobody inspected at the source.

We tip in the same building, on the same shift, with the same people who braided the cord. Crimp pressure on metal tips, tip length, and pull strength get checked before the cord is bagged. That is the difference between a drawcord that survives twenty wash cycles and one that comes back as a customer complaint.

It also means a garment-ready delivery: cord braided, dyed, cut to your exact finished length and tipped both ends, bagged by size and colour, ready to feed straight into your sewing line with no in-house prep.

Google search data (July 2026) records 480 monthly searches for drawstring cord in the United States. Most of the US enquiries we receive arrive between February and June — hoodie, jogger and fleece programs get cut in summer to reach autumn retail, and the cord has to be shade-approved before the fabric is cut.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order quantity for wholesale drawstring cord?

Trial orders start at 100 meters per SKU, and you can mix diameters and shades across SKUs in one shipment. We keep the trial minimum low on purpose — you should see the cord against your own fabric before committing to a season's requirement.

Can you match a drawstring cord to a specific colour?

Yes. Send a Pantone reference or, better, a physical swatch of your garment fabric. We dye in our own house, so we can run a lab dip and send you the cord to approve before bulk. Cotton and polyester take the same dye differently, so tell us the material at the same time as the shade.

Do you supply drawcord already cut to length and tipped?

That is our standard for apparel programs. We cut to your finished garment length and tip both ends on our in-house aglet machines — metal tips, heat-sealed tips or moulded tips. Bundles are bagged by size and shade so they feed straight into your sewing line. Plain cut ends are also available if you tip in-house.

Should I choose cotton or polyester drawstring cord?

Cotton for softness, a matte finish and natural-fibre garments — specify pre-shrunk if the garment gets a hot wash. Polyester for colour retention, abrasion resistance at the eyelet and dimensional stability after laundering, which is why activewear and outdoor programs usually choose it. Blends sit in between and are common on mid-price fleece.

How long does shipping take from India to the United States?

Air courier runs 7-10 days to US destinations and suits trial orders and urgent replenishment. Sea freight runs 25-35 days to US ports and makes sense for full-carton bulk programs. We quote both options with every enquiry so you can decide against your cutting date.
